Candles
What type of wax does dusk use?dusk hand-pours some 6 million candles a year using the finest quality, food-grade paraffin wax. We do use a small quantity of palm wax in our container candles. We started adding palm wax to the container candles as a safety measure based on Customer feedback in order to minimise the risk of paraffin wax pool fires and to reduce smoke emissions. In 2010, before we commenced using Palm Wax, dusk undertook extensive research and also joined the RSPO (Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil). We have been proud members ever since. We joined the RSPO to avoid becoming unwitting participants in promoting non-sustainable product. Working through the RSPO and some very helpful environmental groups we found a reputable Certified supplier who provide the highly refined wax products in the very small quantities that we require. All wax used in dusk container candles is from Certified Sustainably Produced Oil (CSPO). |
Does Paraffin wax represent a health risk? No. In recent years there has been a lot of misinformation about paraffin wax. In truth paraffin wax is considered to be a very safe product. Paraffin wax has been extensively tested around world and in all categories it is classified as non-hazardous, non-toxic and is considered to be non-carcinogenic and stable. Individual health effects can vary with the type of exposure and individual susceptibility. We always advise that if you burn or melt wax that it is done in a well ventilated room. This is not specific to paraffin wax. It is the same recommendation we make for bees wax, soy wax or any other type of wax. |
Do dusk wicks contain lead? No, dusk candles are made with lead-free cotton wicks. Some of our candles such as containers and votives have a fine zinc core to keep the wick upright - these are safe and non-toxic. |
How do I reduce candle smoking? All candles should have their wicks trimmed to about 6mm every time before burning (and have all debris removed). Also make sure the candle is not oxygen-starved and never burn candles in a draught. |
Is candle soot harmful? No. The minuscule amount of soot produced by a candle is a natural byproduct of incomplete combustion. Candle soot is similar to everyday household sources of soot such as from kitchen toasters and cooking oils and is not considered a health concern. |
Why do candles drip?Primarily it's down to the quality of manufacture. The best will certainly drip less. However, it's impossible to guarantee a dripless candle. |
How do I get a more even burn?Avoid draughts and turn the candle periodically. |
How do I support taper candles?Use dusk candle wax stickers on bottom of taper candles. |
Can I improve taper burn?Yes. Just refrigerate the tapers for an hour before burning. Make sure you put them in a bag first or the wick will absorb moisture. |
How do I polish my candles?Gently rub with a nylon stocking to bring back original shine. |
What is a candle's minimum burn time?Burn time is affected by wax type; wick size and type; the actual insertion of the wick; dye colouring (a darker candle will not burn the same as a light one) and burn environment (draughts will significantly reduce the burn time). A good rule of thumb is always to burn your pillar candles for 1 hour per 2.5cm of diameter each time you light them. This allows a wax pool to develop, preventing the candle wall from falling in. |
How should I store my candles?Store candles in a cool, dark and dry place and keep like scents together. Candles have different melting points, so never leave candles in your car on warm days. |
How do I avoid wax fade?Keep candles out of direct sunlight. |
What's a good tip for votives?Drop a teaspoon or two of water into the votive holder before putting the votive in. This will help the candle to slide out for replacement. |
How do I remove spilt wax from benchtops?Let the wax cool. Use a plastic spatula to scrape off excess and a mild abrasive cleaner to remove the rest. |
How do I remove spilt wax from carpets?Let the wax cool. Place a paper towel over the spill and use a warm iron to heat and absorb wax. Change the towel repeatedly. Turpentine will dissolve paraffin wax – place a small amount on a clean rag and gently rub the area. |
Why wouldn't I be getting any scent? An exceedingly complex area. The candle's ability to 'throw' a scent is affected by: wax type; quality of scent; amount of scent, its manufacture and size of room. |
Can all candles be used outdoors? No. Outdoor candles are generally designed for that use, with larger wicks to combat drafts and draw more fuel. |
Why would a container candle have air bubbles? These are known as 'wet spots' and are caused by a variety of things, particularly the adhesion between the wax and the jar. Some are controllable, some are not. dusk uses a variety of techniques to minimise the effect, including a special blend of wax. |
Aromatherapy
What is the difference between fragrant and essential oils?Fragrant oils have a strong aroma, however they have no therapeutic properties. Pure essential oils and essential oil blends also have a strong aroma, however they also release their natural uplifting, refreshing and calming properties into the atmosphere or body. To find out more about Aromatherapy Safety, please click here. |
How can essential oils be used? There are many ways to enjoy the benefits of essential oils such as for massage, added to bath water, with oil burners and steam inhalations as well as with dusk MoodMist® Diffusers. |
Can essential oils be applied directly to the skin? No. Essential oils are highly concentrated and must be diluted in a carrier oil before use. Never apply undiluted essential oils directly onto the skin. Always test on a small area of skin before use. Discontinue use if irritation occurs. |
What is a carrier oil?Carrier oils are natural vegetable oils which can be used to carry essential oils onto the skin in a safe way. |
How can carrier oils be used?Carrier oils are nourishing and moisturising for the skin and can be used for massage. In addition, you can use the carrier oil to blend your own essential oils tailored to meet your personal needs. Use the dusk Blending Kit for convenience. |
Where are dusk's essential oils sourced from? While some oils are from Australia, most are sourced from various countries around the world. |
Why are some essential oils priced higher than others?Essential oils are a natural product and the availability of many are quite limited. Also the extraction technique varies from plant to plant, so there is a wide variation in the cost of essential oils. |
How should essential oils be stored?Ensure protection of your essential oils by keeping them away from direct sunlight and heat. Always store oils in a dark coloured glass container, or in the one purchased. The oils should be stored out of reach of children. |
Can essential oil products be used during pregnancy? Please consult a qualified medical practitioner before using products that contain essential oils if you are planning a pregnancy, are pregnant or breast feeding. |
